David Sills first got famous for being a seventh-grade USC quarterback commit. He made his college debut Saturday as a West Virginia wide receiver.

The Mountaineers put the true freshman to use against Baylor as an outside receiver after he impressed the coaching staff on scout team. He scored a 35-yard touchdown and added a 29-yard catch in his first real snaps at his new position. Why burn his redshirt midway through the season? Because he can help.

“David went in and competed,” WVU receivers coach Lonnie Galloway told MetroNews' Allan Taylor. “He wanted to play, so we worked him in the rotation. He’s a great athlete and he wanted to play.”

And West Virginia needed the depth. Shelton Gibson and Jovon Durante have been playing a ton of snaps every week, and the Mountaineers don't have many proven commodities among their reserves. Sills brings some serious athleticism and is a big target at 6-foot-3 and 198 pounds. He looked like a natural against the Bears.

So is the move going to stick after this season? For now, his coaches say no. The long-term plan for Sills hasn't changed.

“He is a quarterback, but he’s playing wideout," Galloway said. "In January he’ll be back at quarterback.”
