New Iowa State coach Matt Campbell is taking a large contingent of his Toledo coaching staff with him, reports Tommy Birch of the Des Moines Register.
Seven coaches are poised to join Campbell in Ames, Iowa, according to Birch.
“Obviously, I’m a very loyal person,” Campbell said. “I would be a fool to sit here and tell you that Matt Campbell did any of this by himself when you have a great staff sitting back in Toledo.”
Campbell also said recruiting would be a priority in every coach he added to his staff.
It will be interesting to see how the Cyclones can recruit with Campbell. His recruiting prowess is well-documented but it will be tested at Iowa State. There is no fertile recruiting ground within driving distance and the overall speed required to keep up with teams like Baylor, TCU and Oklahoma is tough to find in Big Ten country. However, the Cyclones do offer a solid fan base, a commitment to the program -- evidenced by the Jack Trice Stadium renovation -- and the chance to be a part of a program rebuild in the Big 12.
Recruiting to Iowa State won't be easy but Campbell could be the right man to do it.
