Big 12 recruiting scorecard: New Iowa State staff moving fast

Here's what's new on the Big 12 recruiting trail as we head into the dead period:

BAYLOR

Total commits: 19

ESPN 300 commits: 8

The latest: With the majority of its class already locked up, Baylor's coaches will chase a few big gets in the next month. Defensive ends Brandon Bowen and Mark Jackson are still big priorities, and landing either one would be a big step for a defense losing two senior starting ends. Bowen could take an official visit in January, and Jackson remains committed to Texas A&M while still considering BU.

IOWA STATE

Total commits: 13

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: There's been a ton of movement in Iowa State's class, as expected, since the coaching change. Five commits recently backed out, most notably juco CB Kamal Hardy (who committed to Purdue), but Matt Campbell's staff had another huge week with new pledges from three-star RB Kene Nwangwu, three-star DT Josh Mueller, juco OT Karson Green and juco CB D'Andre Payne.

KANSAS

Total commits: 13

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: Kansas bolstered its depth up front with its commitment from three-star DT Isi Holani, ESPN's No. 14 junior college defensive tackle. Holani picked KU over the likes of Oklahoma State, Kansas State and Boise State.

KANSAS STATE

Total commits: 11

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: Kansas State hosted a large group of committed visitors over the weekend and added to that group with the commitment of three-star DE/OLB Bronson "Boom" Massie. He's a big sleeper out of the East Texas region who turned down offers from a few other Power 5 programs, including Cal and Washington.

OKLAHOMA

Total commits: 13

ESPN 300 commits: 3

The latest: The Sooners are ahead of the game with four 2017 pledges, including three members of the ESPN Junior 300. Their latest junior commitment came from Cedarian Lamb, a 6-foot-2 wideout from the Houston area who racked up 1,012 receiving yards and 10 TDs this season.

OKLAHOMA STATE

Total commits: 19

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: The bad news is the decommitment of four-star QB Nick Starkel, which could not come at a worse time in terms of finding a replacement -- the dead period definitely limits the Oklahoma State staff's ability to evaluate their other options. A little good news from the weekend: The Pokes got ESPN 300 DT Marcel Southall on campus for a visit. He's had OSU, OU and Texas in-home visits in the past few weeks.

TCU

Total commits: 18

ESPN 300 commits: 5

The latest: TCU is making progress up front with its class. Three-star DE/OLB Sci Martin gave the Frogs his pledge last week, and junior college OG Chris Gaynor flipped to TCU on Sunday evening soon after his official visit to Fort Worth. Gaynor, ESPN's No. 4 juco guard prospect, had committed to Kansas State last month but got his TCU offer over the weekend.

TEXAS

Total commits: 12

ESPN 300 commits: 2

The latest: Texas hosted its early enrollee commits this weekend as well as three out-of-state talents worth keeping an eye on: four-star TE Irvin Smith, three-star ILB David Reese and three-star DT D'Andre Christmas-Giles. Reese is expected to make his decision this week. Christmas-Giles decommitted from Tennessee on Sunday after his visit to Austin, but he also picked up an LSU offer over the weekend.

TEXAS TECH

Total commits: 26

ESPN 300 commits: 0

The latest: Texas Tech missed out on four-star OLB Marvin Terry, who committed to Missouri over the weekend, but did get some good news for 2017. The Red Raiders landed a legacy commitment from WR Jalen Reagor, the son of former Texas Tech All-American Montae Reagor.

WEST VIRGINIA

Total commits: 23

ESPN 300 commits: 1

The latest: West Virginia's next commitment could come from junior college DB Neiko Robinson, and he's an interesting find. Robinson signed with Penn State in 2013 but only spent a month in the program before leaving. He's now at Mississippi Gulf Coast C.C. and would help address a big need in the secondary.
