Preseason camp has not begun, so making predictions may seem like folly. Some of our annual Big 12 season predictions have been on the money while others have been way off base in the past. But why should that stop us?
During the next couple of weeks, we will be making predictions for every Big 12 game this season. We continue our predictions with Week 8:
West Virginia 38, TCU 37: The Horned Frogs' unbeaten run ends at the hands of the Mountaineers, who see their youthful defense grow up in the second half, forcing three TCU turnovers. Rushel Shell and Shelton Gibson are critical playmakers in the victory, with Shell’s 101 rushing yards allowing a pair of long touchdown receptions by Gibson as West Virginia keeps TCU’s defense honest with its balance.
Oklahoma State 31, Kansas 28: The Cowboys barely escape Kansas with a victory for the third straight time after winning their last two road games at Kansas by 13 combined points. Ben Grogan’s field goal is followed by Jordan Sterns’ game-clinching interception with under five minutes remaining. LaQuvionte Gonzalez has another terrific game for Kansas with one rushing touchdown and one receiving touchdown and Barry J. Sanders is the star for Oklahoma State with 144 rushing yards.
Texas 24, Kansas State 20: The Longhorns win at Kansas State for only the second time ever in a game that is remembered for Malik Jefferson’s monster performance. The sophomore finishes with 17 tackles, three sacks and a fumble recovery returned for a touchdown early in the fourth quarter. Texas' defense is terrific in the second half, allowing just a field goal to help rally from a 17-7 halftime deficit.
Oklahoma 38, Texas Tech 24: The Sooners continue to roll after slipping up against TCU in early October. Samaje Perine and Joe Mixon help Oklahoma control the game throughout, rushing for more than 100 yards apiece against Texas Tech for the second straight season. All told, Oklahoma’s 331 rushing yards essentially keeps Patrick Mahomes on the sidelines and stomps out the Red Raiders’ hopes of knocking off the defending conference champions.
