Predicting the 2016 season: Week 12

Preseason camp has not begun so making predictions may seem like folly. Some of our annual Big 12 season predictions have been on the money while others have been way off base in the past. But why should that stop us?

Over the next couple of weeks we will be making predictions for every Big 12 game this season. We continue our predictions with Week 12:

TCU 38, Oklahoma State 31: The Horned Frogs offense is terrific in the win after a slow start against the Cowboys. Receivers Deante Gray and Ty Slanina combine for three touchdowns and TCU's defense shuts down Oklahoma State in the fourth quarter, allowing less than 5 yards per play to cement the win, stomp out the Pokes hopes of a 10th win and another victory over the Horned Frogs.

Texas Tech 42, Iowa State 38: Patrick Mahomes' first trip to Ames, Iowa, in 2014 included a late fourth quarter touchdown pass to grab a late victory. History repeats itself in 2016 except Mahomes runs in the game-winner with just over three minutes remaining. The junior quarterback accounts for 414 yards and four touchdowns as the Red Raiders lock down their first regular season with at least eight wins under Kliff Kingsbury.

Texas 35, Kansas 7: The Longhorns overwhelm Kansas as their young offensive players continue to grow into their roles. Shane Buechele throws for more than 300 yards, Chris Warren III rushes for more than 100 yards and Devin Duvernay has more than 100 receiving yards as Texas fans get a glimpse at the future of the offense.

Baylor 41, Kansas State 20: The Bears bounce back from consecutive losses with explosive offensive showing in a win over the Wildcats. Seth Russell's run-pass threat creates problems for the Wildcats' defense as he rushes for 122 yards including a 61-yard scramble for a touchdown and passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

Oklahoma 45, West Virginia 42: Simply put, the Mountaineers leave Milan Puskar Stadium feeling like they let an upset bid get away. Meanwhile, Oklahoma heads home with its College Football Playoff hopes intact and renewed confidence that Baker Mayfield loves to rise to his best in critical moments. Mayfield and the Sooners' get the ball with just over a minute left, trailing 42-38, and promptly cruise down the field behind their Heisman candidate. Mayfield is 3-of-4 on the game-winning drive, capped off by a 11-yard touchdown to Mark Andrews with 11 seconds remaining in the game.
