Syracuse falls hard at Washington

I actually had Syracuse fans asking me this week about what bowl they were going to and whether the Orange could be ranked by Week 5.

Can't blame them for dreaming big after so many years of heartache. But Syracuse hasn't turned the corner yet.

After an easy road win at Akron in the opener and a quick 10-0 lead at Washington, Orange fans were really getting excited. It didn't last long. The Huskies and Jake Locker responded with a vengeance, scoring 27 straight points and then cruising to a 41-20 win.

The Syracuse defense looked like a strength, especially after giving up just three points to Akron. But there's a big difference between the Zips and an offense led by perhaps the No. 1 pick in next year's NFL Draft. Locker threw for 289 yards and four touchdowns.

This was never going to be an easy game -- three time zones away and on the road. But I expected a better performance. Syracuse should still be 3-1 after its first four games, but it has a lot of room for improvement.
