Connecticut coach Randy Edsall gave an update on his team Monday and made sure to point out one fact: The Huskies are the first team from New England to make it to a BCS game.
Hmm, wonder whom that was aimed at? Probably not the Maine Black Bears.
The only other FBS program in New England, of course, is Boston College, the Huskies' one-time colleague in the Big East that is now in a cold war with UConn when it comes to football. How much satisfaction do you think it gives Edsall and Connecticut fans that their team made it to a BCS game before the Eagles?
The ironic thing is that BC might have made a BCS game by now if it had stayed in the Big East. The Eagles went 10-3 in 2006, 11-3 in 2007 and made the ACC championship game in '07 and '08. Yet here are the bowls they have played in since leaving the Big East: MPC Computers, Meineke Car Care, Champs Sports, Music City and Emerald, with a trip this year to the Kraft Fight Hunger Bowl.
Meanwhile, an 8-4 UConn is heading to the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The first team in New England to do so.
