The Big East has a Wednesday night special tonight between Pitt and UConn, at 8 p.m. on ESPN. This has forced me to relive the horror of my picks in Week 8. Going 0-3 is, quite frankly, pathetic. I need a rousing pep talk to get me out of this unprecedented slump. Or maybe somebody to talk some sense into me.
That brings me to Pitt. I have been wrong on the Panthers in their past three games, picking them to lose to USF and beat Rutgers and Utah. See, I thought the Panthers we saw against the Scarlet Knights and Utes would show up against USF. I thought the Panthers we saw against USF would show up against Rutgers. I just figured playing at home would be an edge on Utah.
So yes, Pitt has let me down.
But like a toddler who keeps going after the electrical socket, I am going to take my chances and go with the Panthers again. See, nobody is talking sense into me. Something inside me tells me Tino Sunseri can be good. He just has a bad offensive line, mediocre receivers and coaches asking him to run a system that fits him as well as it fits me. They have vowed to simplify the game plan and supply a more steady dose of Ray Graham this week. With a week off to make corrections, I expect to see a much better offensive plan.
UConn just cannot score on offense. The Pitt defense has not been half bad, and no doubt will try to come after Johnny McEntee the way USF and West Virginia did. This one sets up to be a defensive battle, but I think the Panthers rise up on national television the way they did the last time they played midweek.
