Northwestern's huge win against No. 13 Iowa came with a heavy cost.
Wildcats quarterback Dan Persa suffered a ruptured Achilles' tendon after throwing the game-winning touchdown pass with 1:22 left. Persa will have season-ending surgery tonight, and redshirt freshman Evan Watkins will take over at quarterback.
What a blow for Persa and Northwestern. There might not be a Big Ten player more valuable to his team than Persa, and it will show down the stretch. At least the kid went out as a winner, turning in an incredible performance against Iowa.
It was hard to see when Persa suffered the injury. I thought he just had a cramp, but he couldn't put any weight on his right foot as he was helped off of the field.
Watkins has played sparingly in Big Ten play, and his first career start will come this week against Wrigley Field against Illinois. Talk about a unique position for a young player.
Knowing Persa, he'll work his butt off to get back from the injury as soon as possible.
