It's true. Anything can happen in sports.

Well, at least fantasy sports. Rittenberg, after serving as the doormat in our Big Ten fantasy league last year, started 2012 off with a bang. His team, The Trombone Shorties, crushed my Non-Gingervitis squad by a score of 155-108.

It sure helps when you get career days from Michigan State RB Le'Veon Bell (38 points) and Nebraska QB Taylor Martinez (35), who did all the heavy lifting for Rittenberg. My squad was saddled by injuries to Nebraska RB Rex Burkhead and Penn State RB Bill Belton. But Ohio State QB Braxton Miller (38) did his best to keep me in contention, and I know Michigan QB Denard Robinson (20) will have better days.

Losing stings, but it's only Week 1. And it means I have the first pick on the Week 2 waiver wire. Here are our pickups for the week:

Brian adds Michigan RB Fitz Toussaint and drops Belton

Rationale: Welcome back, Fitz, and welcome to my fantasy team. I'm expecting big numbers from you against Air Force. Belton is not expected to play this week because of a leg injury.

Adam adds Ohio State WR Corey Brown and drops Purdue WR Antavian Edison

Rationale: Nothing against Edison, who did a nice job in Week 1, but I like the Ohio State-Central Florida matchup a little better, especially now that the Buckeyes, you know, actually pass the ball on offense. Brown certainly was Braxton Miller's top target against Miami (Ohio), and I like the connection to continue this week.

Brian adds Iowa RB Damon Bullock and drops Burkhead

Rationale: I hate to lose Burkhead, but it sounds as if he won't play this week and could be slowed for a while. Bullock ran for 150 yards and ranks third in the Big Ten in rushing after one week.

Brian adds Michigan State WR Bennie Fowler and drops Wisconsin TE Jacob Pedersen

Rationale: Projection pick here. Fowler was quiet in the opener, but Andrew Maxwell looked for him several times. I expect the Spartans' pass game to improve and for Fowler to reach the end zone at least once against Central Michigan.
