Barry Alvarez is coming back to the sidelines.
The Wisconsin athletic director confirmed Thursday in a news conference that he will serve as interim coach in the Rose Bowl Game presented by Vizio against Stanford. Alvarez, who retired in 2005, has won three Rose Bowls and is in the Rose Bowl Hall of Fame.
Alvarez said the senior captains asked him to coach. He told them he would be honored, as long as they understood, "If I was going to coach, we weren't going to screw around. We were going out there to win."
Alvarez confirmed this will be a one-game deal and that he'll hire a permanent replacement for Bret Bielema soon.
We'll have more notes on this and some thoughts on the move coming up shortly. I can give you a short preview: We like it.
