Rookies to Maine for game reps

The Boston Celtics assigned rookies Marcus Smart, James Young, and Dwight Powell to the Maine Red Claws of the D-League on Thursday.

All three players are expected to be in uniform tonight when Maine hosts Fort Wayne at 7 p.m.

The Celtics, coming off a back-to-back, were not scheduled to practice Thursday. With the Red Claws at home, Boston sent the rookie north to get some much-needed game reps.

For Young and Powell, this is their third assignments to Maine this season.

Smart, the No. 6 pick in June's draft, returned to NBA game action on Wednesday night, but played only five minutes as Celtics coach Brad Stevens eased him back in without the benefit of a full-team practice after missing nearly a month's time. Smart can log valuable floor time in Maine and that might help Stevens ramp up his minutes on Friday when the Los Angeles Lakers visit TD Garden.

All three rookies are likely to be recalled Friday. The Red Claws have another game on Saturday, which would be another opportunity for the likes of Young and Powell to return for game reps.
