The NBA formally announced on Monday that the Boston Celtics will play nine-time Euroleague and 32-time Spanish League champion Real Madrid in a preseason game on Oct. 8 at Barclaycard Center as part of the NBA's Global Games.
The tilt will cap Boston's brief European vacation. The Celtics also visit three-time Euroleague Champion and 26-time Italian League champion Olimpia Milano on Oct. 6 at Mediolanum Forum.
The Celtics are set to rack up international travel miles next season. The team will play a regular-season game against the Sacramento Kings on Dec. 3 in Mexico City.
“On behalf of the Celtics organization, we are proud to return to Madrid for NBA Global Games 2015," said Celtics president of basketball operations Danny Ainge in the league's release on the event. "I have particularly fond memories of playing in Madrid back in 1988 and I am sure our current players will relish this unique opportunity.”
The NBA noted that the Celtics and Real Madrid previously met in 1988 in a game that featured Fernando Martin -- the first Spanish player to play in the NBA -- and the late Drazen Petrovic.
“It will be an honor to represent the Celtics and the NBA in Madrid," said Celtics guard Avery Bradley in the release. "I know there are passionate NBA fans in Spain and we look forward to an electric atmosphere on game night."
