Bob Cousy's team record of 210 assists in a calendar month lived 674 months before Rajon Rondo shattered the 56-year-old accomplishment with 219 assists in March. Could Rondo's record live for less than a month?
Assist-happy Rondo has dished out a whopping 142 assists through 10 games in April. At that rate, with five games remaining, he's on pace to produce 213 helpers in 15 games this month (and if the team squeeze in a playoff game or two, that number could inflate even more). If nothing else, he's got a chance at his own mark.
The question is whether the Celtics will give Rondo a bit of a break before the regular season ends, which could affect his chances to challenge his mark. That said, Rondo currently owns a 22-game double-digit assist streak and would seemingly want to keep it alive as he begins to approach John Stockton's streak of 29 consecutive games with double-digit helpers.
One thing is certain: With his assist-happy play in recent weeks, Rondo will finish as the league's assist leader for the first time in his career (he had finished in the top 6 the past three years, including runner-up last season). This year, Rondo is averaging 11.6 helpers per game (Phoenix's Steve Nash is second at 10.9 per game).
