With the Patriots' season now over, the future is uncertain for 14 players whose contracts will be expiring. Adding to that uncertainty is the lack of a new collective bargaining agreement between the NFL and the NFLPA; until an agreement is reached, free agency will likely be postponed.
A new CBA could change the amount of accrued seasons required for players to reach restricted and unrestricted free agency. The current system calls for three seasons to reach restricted free agency and four seasons to become an unrestricted free agent.
If that system remains, then safety Josh Barrett and running back BenJarvus Green-Ellis would be scheduled to become restricted free agents, while cornerback Kyle Arrington would become an exclusive-rights free agent.
