Belichick a no-show at media breakfast

NEW ORLEANS -- Patriots coach Bill Belichick did not attend this morning's "Coaches Breakfast" at the NFL's annual meeting. Of the league's 32 head coaches, Belichick was the only coach not to attend the 75-minute breakfast at the Roosevelt Hotel.

Unlike the Super Bowl, where media sessions are required, Belichick is not subject to a fine by the NFL. Belichick addressed local reporters for about 10 minutes on Monday.

Belichick's absence led to a few light moments with other head coaches who were aware of his absence. One came with Bills coach Chan Gailey.

Reporter: What about [former Bills defensive lineman] Marcus Stroud? What kind of guy do you think the Patriots are getting?

Gailey: "Ask Bill. He'll know."

Gailey flashed a smile while looking at Belichick's empty table next to him.

At Rex Ryan's table, there was one stretch of time in which four Boston-based reporters were present, with just one New York reporter.

"I don't know why that is," Ryan said, smiling.
