The Patriots and kicker Chris Koepplin have agreed to terms on a contract, according to a source. Koepplin, who kicked at UMass, was with the Patriots last offseason and handled the bulk of the kickoff duties in preseason as Stephen Gostkowski worked his way back from quad surgery.
Koepplin was released at the end of the preseason and did not play in the NFL in 2011.
Gostkowski, who will make $2.1 million this season, would seemingly be a lock for a roster spot and it would be unlikely for the Patriots to carry two kickers. But for Koepplin, it is an opportunity to showcase his talents to the rest of the league, similar to how Pro Bowler Robbie Gould did with the Patriots when New England had Adam Vinatieri on the roster.
