Checking in on injured Patriots at the bye

During the television broadcast of the New England Patriots' Week 8 win over the St. Louis Rams, CBS analyst Phil Simms passed along a quote from Patriots coach Bill Belichick in which he declared that no matter what week it comes, the bye week always comes at the right time.

Well, the bye week is upon the Patriots, and it's certainly a fitting time. Upon their arrival home from London, the Patriots will have traveled over 19,000 miles this season (including preseason travel), and beyond that, the team is dealing with a number of injuries.

Here's a roundup of the Patriots current injury woes, with known relevant info included.

Cornerback Kyle Arrington

Injury: Head

Quick hit: Arrington left the game on Sunday with what the team called a head issue. The specifics of the injury, as well as the recovery time needed, remain unclear.

Running back Brandon Bolden

Injury: Knee

Quick hit: The left knee issue has kept Bolden out for two straight games, and was suffered during the team's Week 6 defeat in Seattle. Bolden has not returned to the practice field since suffering the injury.

Defensive lineman Ron Brace

Injury: Back

Quick hit: Brace was limited in practice last week but active on Sunday against the Rams. He did, however, appear to aggravate the back issue during the game, as trainers took the field to tend to him. No word on the severity of the issue.

Safety Patrick Chung

Injury: Shoulder

Quick hit: Chung has missed each of the team's past two games, but was able to practice on a limited basis last week. In his absence, the team has moved cornerback Devin McCourty into Chung's safety spot.

Cornerback Marquice Cole

Injury: Hamstring

Quick hit: Cole was injured in Sunday's win, and the Patriots announced it was a hamstring issue. He was listed as questionable to return, but did not take the field after the play on which he went down.

Wide receiver Julian Edelman

Injury: Hand

Quick hit: Edelman suffered the hand injury just before halftime in Week 3, missing three games because of it. Given that he has played in each of the team's past two games, it appears the issue is no longer significant.

Safety Steve Gregory

Injury: Hip

Quick hit: For four games, the Patriots have been without their starting safety after he suffered a hip injury against the Bills. Gregory has met with the media in recent weeks and seems to be progressing, but no official word on his recovery time is available.

Tight end Rob Gronkowski

Injury: Hip

Quick hit: Gronkowski has yet to miss any games because of the hip issue, but has been rested on occasion for a series at a time, and also limited during practice. Because he has played through the issue, it seems more about management than recovery.

Tight end Aaron Hernandez

Injury: Ankle

Quick hit: Arguably the most salient injury of the season for the Patriots, Hernandez's right ankle has not responded to treatment, according to ESPN's NFL Insider Adam Schefter, and he was held out of the team's Week 8 game. He had previously returned to the field for two weeks of action. The bye week buys him some time to rest up.

Linebacker Dont'a Hightower

Injury: Hamstring

Quick hit: Hightower looks close to full strength back on the field, but continues to practice on a limited basis with a hamstring issue. He told media members last week that the key to his continued recovery is additional stretching.

Wide receiver Brandon Lloyd

Injury: Knee

Quick hit: We don't know a whole lot about Lloyd's issue, but he hasn't missed a game because of it. On Sunday, he looked sharp catching two touchdowns after being limited all week in practice.

Defensive tackle Kyle Love

Injury: Knee

Quick hit: Love has landed on the injury report in recent weeks, but has been a full participant in practice with a knee issue. He has not shown any visible signs of being slowed by the knee.

Guard Logan Mankins

Injury: Calf/hip

Quick hit: Mankins was inactive again on Sunday, and when he doesn't play, you know it must be a painful ailment given his toughness. The fact that he traveled with the team to London could be a sign that he was close to a return, but not quite ready. Donald Thomas has filled in capably in Mankins’ absence.

Linebacker Jerod Mayo

Injury: Elbow

Quick hit: An elbow issue knocked Mayo out of Week 7 action for a portion of the game and limited him in practice last week, but the Patriots' defensive captain was on the field on Sunday and looked close to his normal self. He finished with seven solo tackles and a forced fumble.

Offensive lineman Nick McDonald

Injury: Shoulder

Quick hit: The reserve lineman has been dealing with the shoulder issue for some time now, but has logged snaps in recent weeks. He continues to be a limited participant in practice.

Cornerback Sterling Moore

Injury: Knee

Quick hit: Though he continues to be limited in practice, Moore also continues to take the field for the Patriots. He may be called upon for an even larger role if Arrington's injury costs him game time.

Defensive end Trevor Scott

Injury: Hamstring

Quick hit: The veteran defensive end missed the entire week of practice prior to the Rams game, and his first game as a member of the Patriots. The nature of the hamstring injury is not known.

Offensive tackle Sebastian Vollmer

Injury: Back/knee

Quick hit: The hulking right tackle has had to work through back and knee issues, but it certainly hasn't seemed to slow him down on the field, as he's been solid for the Patriots in 2012.

Wide receiver Wes Welker

Injury: Ankle

Quick hit: Welker, who had been limited in practice due to an ankle injury leading up to Week 8, left Sunday's game after getting his left ankle stuck in the turf, he told reporters after the game. He said he thought the ankle would be OK, but that it would be evaluated going forward.

Linebacker Tracy White

Injury: Foot

Quick hit: A top special-teamer, White has been absent in recent games due to a foot issue. He has not practiced recently, and was ruled out of Sunday's game on the team's Friday practice report.

Other injuries of note

Tight end Visanthe Shiancoe

Injury: Unknown

Quick hit: The veteran, who is currently on the injured reserve list with the designation to return, returned to practice last week, leaving the team 21 days to make a decision on whether he will return to game action this season. The nature of his injury is unknown, but as part of his status as the designated IR player, he was only eligible to return to game action after Week 8. That means he could suit up when the team returns from its bye against the Bills in Week 10.

Tight end Jake Ballard

Injury: Knee

Quick hit: Ballard remains on PUP as he recovers from a major knee injury, and it seems unlikely he will return to the field this season.

Defensive lineman Myron Pryor

Injury: Unknown

Quick hit: Like Ballard, Pryor is on the PUP list. His status for 2012 is unknown.

Offensive lineman Markus Zusevics

Injury: Pectoral

Quick hit: Zusevics, signed as a rookie free agent, landed on the reserve/non-football injury due to a pectoral injury suffered back at the college combine in February.
