FOXBOROUGH -- With the Patriots practicing in pads for the second straight day, it offered another chance to watch full-contact pass-rush drills.
Here was what we saw:
Strong showings
DE Chandler Jones -- After being pushed to the outside by left tackle Nate Solder on his first rep, he wins decisively over Chris McDonald on an interior rush, then gets low on Solder to gain the edge. In 2-on-2 combination work, he twice penetrates on Markus Zusevics.
DE Rob Ninkovich -- Quickness shows in two rushes against Sebastian Vollmer. He's pushed to the outside initially by R.J. Mattes on a third rep before continuing his rush and staying alive with second effort. He's relentless.
DT Joe Vellano -- Rookie free-agent defensive tackle shows short-area quickness with nice interior moves against Ryan Wendell, Markus Zusevics, Chris McDonald and Josh Kline. The 6-foot-2, 300-pound Vellano played at Maryland and has been the No. 4 defensive tackle in camp behind Vince Wilfork, Tommy Kelly and Marcus Forston.
Under-the-radar performer
G Tyronne Green -- Veteran holds his ground against DEs Jermaine Cunningham and Justin Francis on interior rushes.
Most decisive victory
DE Marcus Benard -- Five-year veteran uses his quickness to the inside and OT Will Svitek doesn't get his hands on him as Benard races by.
Jumping the gun
DT Tommy Kelly, DE Jermaine Cunningham, DE Justin Francis -- Each is penalized for encroachment.
Want to see more of...
DE Michael Buchanan -- Seventh-round draft choice displays combination of speed and power off the edge in strong 1-on-1 rush against OT Elvis Fisher and then is competitive against LG Logan Mankins in 2-on-2 work. Later in practice, in 11 on 11, he tips a pass and has a strong rush against OT Kevin Haslam.
