New England Patriots offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels on Tuesday did his best Bill Belichick impression when asked about rumblings that he was a potential candidate for the University of Florida’s now-vacant head coaching position.
“I really honestly don’t even have any idea about that rumor,” McDaniels said. “I heard it. But, I have nothing to add to it.
“My focus is solely on the Chargers and getting our team ready to go on offense. I’m trying to do the best that I can.”
Gators coach Will Muschamp was fired Sunday, and shortly after McDaniels’ name made the rounds as a possible replacement. For McDaniels, taking a spin around the coaching rumor mill is nothing new. He was interviewed for the Cleveland Browns’ head coaching vacancy last season before eventually taking himself out of consideration.
“It’s the time of year that this happens quite a bit and I’ve been through it before,” McDaniels said Tuesday from San Diego, where the Patriots are preparing for the Chargers. “Keep your focus where it belongs, which is on the next opponent. We have plenty to work on and get prepared for because this is a really good defense to face.”
