Proposing a Stephen Gostkowski contract

Earlier today, we began a series on the projected financial market for New England Patriots free agents. Kicker Stephen Gostkowski was the first player to be featured.

This is a no-brainer from this perspective as Gostkowski still has several good years ahead and has earned a top-of-the-market pact based on his value as a field goal kicker and on kickoffs. So let's take it one step further and draw up a contract proposal that could potentially close the deal.

Terms: Four years, $16 million

Signing bonus: $5 million

2015

Base salary: $2 million

Cap figure: $3.25 million

2016

Base salary: $2.5 million

Cap figure: $3.75 million

2017

Base salary: $3 million

Cap figure: $4.25 million

2018

Base salary: $3.5 million

Cap figure: $4.75 million

This would make Gostkowski the NFL's highest-paid kicker with an average annual salary of $4 million, but at the same time his cap charges would remain below the 2015 franchise-tag figure for him in each of the first three years of the deal.

Seems like a win-win from this viewpoint, and that's usually what results in a deal getting done.
