The Red Sox have signed outfielder Joey Gathright and assigned him to Pawtucket.

Gathright, 30, had been playing with the independent Yuma Scorpions.

Gathright hasn't been in the majors since 2009, when he appeared in 17 games for the Red Sox and was on their playoff roster as a pinch runner after being acquired from the Baltimore Orioles Aug. 29.
