Cherington: No update on Varitek

FORT MYERS, Fla. -- For the first time since 1997, the Red Sox are in Fort Myers preparing and captain Jason Varitek is nowhere to be found.

And that is not expected to change.

General manager Ben Cherington was asked on Thursday if there was any update on the 39-year-old catcher.

“No,” Cherington simply said.

Seemingly set at the position with Jarrod Saltalamacchia and Kelly Shoppach, the Red Sox offered Varitek a minor-league contract with an invitation to big-league camp. The speculation is Varitek will retire. A source recently told ESPNBoston.com’s Gordon Edes that Varitek will “decide soon” on his future.

Cherington said didn’t anticipate any additions to his spring training roster.

“We’ve made additions in other spring trainings, those things happen, but I don’t anticipate any right now,” he said.
