Middlebrooks injured on checked swing

SARASOTA, Fla. -- Red Sox third baseman Will Middlebrooks left in the first inning of Wednesday night’s exhibition against the Baltimore Orioles after injuring himself on a checked swing against Orioles pitcher Chris Tillman.

UPDATE: The Red Sox announced Middlebrooks left with soreness in his right wrist and will be reevaluated Thursday.

That was the same wrist that Middlebrooks fractured when he was hit by a pitch by Cleveland’s Esmil Rogers last August. Middlebrooks did not undergo surgery, but missed the last 48 games of the season.

Middlebrooks flung his helmet into the dugout as he came off the field.
