No one in recent memory consistently electrified Fenway Park more than Pedro Martinez. Not David Ortiz , not Roger Clemens, not Koji Uehara , Jonathan Papelbon or Manny Ramirez .
During his Red Sox heyday, which was among the finest stretches ever by a starting pitcher, every Pedro start was an event, bringing a playoff atmosphere to a weeknight game in May against the Royals.
On Tuesday, Martinez is expected to be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame in his first year of eligibility. We use the opportunity to look back at 10 of Pedro's most memorable moments in a Red Sox uniform (in chronological order):
June 25, 1999: Martinez was a master on the mound, but apparently on his off days he could cause a little good-natured trouble. On this night, his teammates had had enough of his antics, so they taped him to a dugout pole to keep him under control. Bothered by a back injury, a weakened Martinez didn't have his typical velocity but used his command and guile to will the Sox to the ALCS. While the Sox KO'd Clemens in the third, Pedro was brilliant, striking out 12 and allowing just two hits over 7 innings. Jonathan Daniel/Getty Images May 6-12, 2000: Pedro tied Luis Tiant's 32-year-old AL record by recording 32 strikeouts over consecutive starts. On May 6, Martinez struck out 17 in a 1-0 loss to the Devil Rays at Fenway, then six days later he fanned 15 in a 9-0 win over the Orioles. Steve Babineau/Getty Images May 28, 2000: Pedro and Roger Clemens matched each other zero for zero in an epic duel at Yankee Stadium. Trot Nixon got to Clemens with a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, then Martinez worked out of a bases-loaded jam to finish the job. Jim Davis/Getty Images Aug. 29, 2000: Vintage Pedro in more ways than one. On his fourth pitch, Martinez hit the Devil Rays' Gerald Williams to spark the first of five brawls. Then Martinez retired 24 straight before giving up a leadoff single in the ninth for a one-hitter. Not Pedro's proudest moment, but unforgettable. AP Photo/Paul J. Bereswill 2004 World Series Game 3: By 2004, Pedro's most dominant days were behind him. But in his first career World Series start, Martinez looked like his old self, allowing three hits and no runs over seven innings. One night later, the Sox were world champs.
