Doug Whaley updates talks with Jerry Hughes, other Bills free agents

Buffalo Bills general manager Doug Whaley appeared on WGR 550 from the NFL combine in Indianapolis on Thursday, addressing the status of talks with the Bills' four big-name free agents.

Here are updates, from Whaley, on each of them:

Whaley on DE Jerry Hughes: "We've sent a proposal over to his representatives. His representatives have sent a counter proposal. I just got off the phone with [vice president of football administration] Jim Overdorf, [who] talked with his representatives at length last night. There's an open line of communication. I haven't met with J.O. yet to see how close we are, or if we're close at all, but I will meet with him once I get off radio row."

Whaley on RB C.J. Spiller: "We've exchanged proposals. It's the same thing: Jim Overdorf is going to meet with his representation this week at the combine and see where we're standing."

Whaley on S Da'Norris Searcy: "That one is going to be a little trickier, just because we put so much money into Aaron Williams last year. But we're going to try our best. It's unfortunate, but that's just the NFL life. You only have so many cap dollars to spread around, and if you invest highly in one -- and the way he played, he may have the chance to go out there and get the same type of money with Aaron -- but you can't have two safeties back there with that type of cap number. So that one is going to be a little more challenging but we're going to try to make it work."

Whaley on LB Brandon Spikes: "Brandon is one of my favorite players. We're going to reach out to his representation and see how he's going to be able to fit into this new defensive scheme. Because of the depth we have and if it would fit with what he sees himself as a player. That one is gonna be more of a, 'Hey, do you want to come back and be a one-, two-down player or do you want to go out there and see if you can do an every-down player?' So that one is going to be a kind of what works for him as well as us."
