Bills put OLB Shaq Lawson on PUP, keeping him out at least six games

The Buffalo Bills cut nine players Tuesday and placed several others on reserve lists, trimming their roster to the NFL-mandated 75 players. Here’s a closer look at the first cuts:

Most significant move: The Bills placed rookie outside linebacker Shaq Lawson on the reserve/physically unable to perform list, which will keep him out of practice and games until the Monday after their Week 6 game. Lawson, Buffalo's first-round pick, can then begin practicing and is eligible to play in the Week 7 game in Miami. This development is expected for Lawson, who had shoulder surgery in May and was not expected to return until between Weeks 6 and 8, a source told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter earlier this month.

Bills to be without special-teams ace: Veteran Marcus Easley is listed as a wide receiver but has been the team's best special-teams player for the past several seasons. After he suffered a knee injury in a Week 16 game last season, Easley missed training camp as he continued to recover. He will have an additional six weeks after the Bills placed him on the reserve/physically unable to perform list. Rookie wide receiver Kolby Listenbee, who had surgery for a hernia before he was drafted in the sixth round in April, was placed on the reserve/non-football injury list and, as with Lawson and Easley, he cannot practice or play for at least the first six weeks of the season.

Two veterans among cuts: None of the Bills' roster moves Tuesday qualified as surprises, but the biggest names were two players with the most experience: wide receiver Greg Little and linebacker David Hawthorne. The Bills signed Hawthorne after rookie Reggie Ragland tore his ACL early in training camp, but Hawthorne never seemed to get his footing behind top inside linebackers Preston Brown, Zach Brown and Brandon Spikes. Meanwhile, Little was part of a competition at the bottom of the Bills' receiver depth chart that likely will be won by Walter Powell. Buffalo cutting Little now allows him a chance to sign elsewhere before the start of the regular season.

Bills' moves: CB Jonathan Dowling (waived/injured); WR Marcus Easley (reserve/physically unable to perform); LS Reid Ferguson (waived); LB David Hawthorne (released); TE Chris Gragg (waived/injured); C Robert Kugler (waived); OLB Shaq Lawson (reserve/PUP); WR Kolby Listenbee (reserve/non-football injury); WR Greg Little (released); TE Jimmay Mundine (waived); LB Reggie Ragland (injured reserve); OT Justin Renfrow (waived/injured); OLB Eric Striker (waived); DT Alameda Ta'amu (waived); QB Austin Trainor (waived); DL Justin Zimmer (waived).
