Oakland’s Rich Hill is 8-3 with a 2.25 ERA, and because he has a very modest one-year, $6 million deal, even small-market teams can theoretically dream about making a deal for him this summer, when the Athletics are expected to market the left-hander – who might turn out to be the best starting pitcher to change teams.

But among some evaluators, there is word that big-market teams might have the advantage in the bidding if the Athletics place one very heavy toll: Some executives believe that Oakland might try to attach the remaining dollars on the contract of designated hitter Billy Butler to Hill.
