DE Jared Allen, LB A.J. Klein ruled out for Panthers' trip to Seattle

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Carolina Panthers defensive end Jared Allen and linebacker A.J. Klein will not make the trip to Seattle for Sunday’s game against the Seahawks.

Allen suffered a pinched nerve the day before Carolina played at Tampa Bay on Oct. 4. He played 35 snaps against the Buccaneers before the injury forced him to sit. He hasn’t practiced all week, struggling with feeling in his foot.

Coach Ron Rivera said Allen possibly could have played, had this been a playoff game. He said the confinement of a cross-country flight played a “huge" role in the decision to sit the league’s active sack leader.

Wes Horton will start for Allen opposite Kony Ealy.

Klein suffered a concussion against Tampa Bay and has been in the league’s protocol since. He practiced on a limited basis all week, but did not receive final clearance from the independent neurologist.

Klein replaced Luke Kuechly the past three games while the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker recovered from a concussion suffered in the opener. Kuechly was cleared Tuesday and is set to start against the Seahawks.

Rivera said he would like to give Kuechly a few snaps off, with Ben Jacobs the top candidate to replace him. But Rivera has no concerns about the conditioning of Kuechly, the 2013 NFL Defensive Player of the Year, if he’s asked to play the entire game.
