CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Cam Newton has been in the news a lot over the past few years for things he has accomplished or said, but on Thursday the Carolina Panthers quarterback decided to take a different approach.
"This just in," Newton said as though he were offering a news flash during an appearance on WFNZ-AM radio’s "The Mac Attack" show.
Newton is friends with both players, who are going head-to-head in the NBA Finals, so he offered this story.
“A person asked me, 'Well, is Steph Curry the best basketball player on the planet?'" Newton said. "I said, 'No.' I said, 'Steph Curry is the best basketball player on the best team on the planet.'
“I still think LeBron is [the best player]. He’s 6-7, athletic, can do anything on the court. But LeBron is not on the best team. Going back to what I was saying, the power of team will always be better than the power of skill."
Earlier in the interview, Newton was defending his comment that his goal this season is to go 1-0 each week, not to go 16-0.
"There’s a difference," he said. “I’m telling you, I wouldn’t be saying it if I didn’t believe that. Last year, people looked at our situation and it became clearer than ever, the power of team is always greater than the power of talent."
Newton also was asked during the 25-minute interview if he could beat Curry in a game of one-on-one.
"The competitive Cam? Absolutely!" Newton said. "The realistic Cam says no way."
