Cam Newton: T-shirt with MLK quote was 'fitting for what was going on'

CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton says “stay tuned" on whether he’ll wear another T-shirt for pregame warm-ups like the black one he donned on Sunday with a Martin Luther King quote on the back.

The quote said in all capital letters: "INJUSTICE ANYWHERE IS A THREAT TO JUSTICE EVERYWHERE." MLK

Newton wore the shirt after a week in which there were violent protests on Wednesday night only a few blocks from Bank of America Stadium following the Tuesday shooting death of a black man by a black police officer in Charlotte.

There also was a peaceful protest outside the stadium prior to Sunday’s game against the Vikings.

"It was just so fitting for what was going on," Newton said of why he wore the shirt. “I just wanted to bring awareness to everyone by just holding each other accountable by doing the right thing, no matter who it is, no matter the age, no matter the race, no matter the gender. It doesn’t matter."
