OTA observations: Roach is back

LAKE FOREST, Ill. -- Here are a few observations from the first of fourteen Bears' organized team activities.

  • Nick Roach returned to action after missing last month's minicamp with hamstring tightness. Roach took starters reps at strongside linebacker, while Pisa Tinoisamoa worked with the second team, along with Hunter Hillenmeyer (MLB) and Brian Iwuh (WLB).

  • Tight end Brandon Manumaleuna ran on the side for a portion of practice with a member of the training staff. Manumaleuna is recovering from knee surgery.

  • Receiver Earl Bennett showed no effects from his minor offseason knee surgery, running routes at full-speed.

  • Cornerback Corey Graham made a pair of nifty interceptions during practice, the first during a one-on-one drill, the second in 7-on-7. Major Wright, Charles Tillman, Tim Jennings and Hillenmeyer also came away with picks in the two-hour workout.

  • The offense had to start and stop a few times, as players are still leaning the new system.

  • Mike Tice continues to rotate guards -- Kevin Shaffer, Roberto Garza, Lance Louis and Johan Asiata all saw time with the first team.

  • Josh Beekman strictly played center.

  • Johnny Knox and Juaquin Iglesias each made a nice grab during 11-on-11.

  • Olin Kreutz (Achilles) and Brad Maynard (hip) remained out.

  • Offensive coordinator Mike Martz used a cane to move around the practice field and periodically gave instructions while sitting in a golf cart (a la Mike Ditka). Martz is fine after undergoing a minor procedure.
