Hawks place Boynton on waivers

The Chicago Blackhawks have placed defenseman Nick Boynton on waivers, according to ESPN.com’s Pierre LeBrun.

Boynton, 32, has played in 41 games this season earning a goal and seven assists. He has been a healthy scratch in recent games until missing Thursday’s contest, against Nashville, with an upper body injury.

If unclaimed, Boynton could be sent to Rockford of the AHL. Hawks general manager Stan Bowman has indicated he is interested in trading for a defenseman and with the trade deadline on Monday, the Hawks could be closing in on a move.

The Hawks have been playing with the maximum numbers of players, 23, allowed on an NHL roster. They would have to move a player off their roster in order to accommodate a trade for a new one.
