CHICAGO -- Ryan Dempster, who is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday, is expected to remain out of action up to an extra week.
Dempster has been out since June 16 with a sore right latissimus dorsi muscle behind his right shoulder.
He has already missed one turn in the rotation and his spot comes up again Tuesday against the New York Mets.
Indications are that Dempster will miss at least one more start after Tuesday and then return on the club’s final road trip of the first half, possibly during the July 6-8 series at New York against the Mets.
Dempster did throw off flat ground Monday, a session where he experienced no discomfort, according to manager Dale Sveum.
In other Cubs injury news, Ian Stewart, who has been out since June 13 with left wrist soreness, returned to hitting in the batting cage Monday, but no timetable has been set for his return. He is eligible to come off the disabled list Friday when the Cubs face the Houston Astros in the first game of a three-game home series.
