Royals claim Chris Volstad on waivers

Chris Volstad, who suffered a 24-start winless streak spanning the past two seasons with the Marlins and Cubs, was claimed on outright waivers by the Royals on Friday.

Volstad, a 26-year-old right-hander, made 21 starts for the Cubs in 2012, finishing 3-12 with a 6.31 ERA. He didn’t get his first win of the season until Aug. 26 in a rain-shortened game against the Rockies.

After the Cubs went winless in his first eight starts, Volstad was sent to Triple-A Iowa in mid-May. He was brought up for one big league start on July 3, then was returned to Triple A. He returned to the Cubs for good on Aug. 4, after the Cubs dealt Ryan Dempster and Paul Maholm at the trade deadline.
