Cubs recall Arrieta, option Sanchez

The Chicago Cubs recalled pitcher Jake Arrieta from Triple-A Iowa before his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday and sent down reliever Eduardo Sanchez.

Arrieta will make his second start for the Cubs since being acquired as part of the Scott Feldman trade with the Baltimore Orioles on July 2. The 27-year-old Arrieta allowed one earned run over six innings in a no-decision against the Milwaukee Brewers on July 30.

Arrieta, who was 2-2 with a 3.56 ERA in seven starts at Iowa, takes the rotation spot of Carlos Villanueva, who moves to the bullpen.

Sanchez is 0-1 with a 5.68 ERA in four relief appearances with the Cubs this season.
