A derogatory print out about GM Jim Hendry publishing a book on how not to win was left on the counter in the press box where the Brewers’ notes are distributed at Miller Park today.
The printout had five bullet points that stated how to effectively mess up a team. The Brewers confiscated the flyers when they were made aware of the printout.
Jeff Samardzija might be part of a Cubs’ six or seven-man rotation. Manager Mike Quade said the right-hander is available in the bullpen this weekend. He will most likely get a start in Florida next weekend. Samardzija was used as a starting pitcher from July on at Triple-A Iowa. He won 11 games in Iowa this season.
Tom Gorzelanny will have another side session on Sunday in preparation to return to the team’s rotation. He sustained a microfracture on the tip of his left pinky finger nine days ago.
Quade and Brewer manager Ken Macha had a long conversation before Friday’s game catching up on old times. Macha and Quade both coached on the same staff in Oakland in the early-2000s. Quade left the A’s to manage the Iowa Cubs in 2003.
“Anytime you go up against a guy who was somewhat of your mentor, I learned a lot from him,” Quade said.
Macha had only nice things to say about Quade as well.
“Give Mike credit, he had a lot of years managing in the minors and he’s a very good baseball guy,” Macha said. “I’m flattered to hear that he feels he learned a few good things from me.”
The Cubs let go of some of their marketing department employees on Thursday. The firings were called a restructuring of the department.
“We appreciate all the great contributions from all the people who were affected by the restructuring,” said marketing director Wally Hayward.
Among the four who were let go was director of sales and promotions Matt Wszolek.
