MESA, Ariz. -- Chicago Cubs right-handed pitcher Todd Wellemeyer, who needed a cortisone shot on Sunday, will throw a side session Tuesday in an attempt to get back on the mound this week.
Wellemeyer has been held to six innings pitched this spring. The veteran is in camp on a minor-league contract. The team has an option to send him to a minor-league affiliate if he doesn't make the 25-man roster.
Infielder Augie Ojeda had an epidural shot in his back on Monday to relieve pain. Ojeda told ESPNChicago.com he hopes to be able to participate in a game by the weekend.
He originally was to battle Darwin Barney for the backup shortstop role. Barney had won that job outright and is now competing for the starting second base job.
Ojeda has signed a minor league contract in case the team asks him to start the season in the minors.
Third baseman Aramis Ramirez will miss his third straight game with flu-like symptoms. He had been battling a 102 fever. He returned to camp Tuesday for the first time in three days.
Ramirez said he'd take batting practice and ground balls Tuesday and try to return to Cactus League play in the next two days.
The Cubs will leave Mesa on March 30 and have a closed workout at 1 p.m. CST at Wrigley Field on Thursday, March 31.
