Bengals move DT Geno Atkins to IR

CINCINNATI -- Four days after announcing that defensive tackle Geno Atkins was done for the season with an ACL tear, the Cincinnati Bengals formerly moved the fourth-year lineman to injured reserve. It was the first in a series of moves designed to restore some depth to Cincinnati's battered defensive line.

With his move to IR, Atkins joins cornerback Leon Hall, defensive end Robert Geathers and defensive back Taylor Mays as Bengals players whose seasons have ended due to injury. Hall was lost for the year after tearing his Achilles during a 27-24 win over Detroit. Mays was lost a week later after dislocating his shoulder in a win over the Jets. During their Week 2 victory over Pittsburgh, Geathers suffered an elbow injury.

Atkins finishes this season with 20 tackles and six sacks. His final sack came in the first quarter of Thursday's game. By the next quarter, he was out of the game.

In addition to Atkins' move, the Bengals also signed defensive end Christo Bilukidi to the 53-man roster, adding another body to the defensive line. A sixth-round selection in last year's draft out of Georgia State, Bilukidi has spent the past two seasons with the Oakland Raiders. He played five games with the Raiders this season before being released last month. The 24-year-old recorded five tackles and the only sack of his career in those five games earlier this season.

Along with signing Bilukidi, the Bengals also added linebacker Bruce Taylor to the practice squad. The former Virginia Tech standout spent part of the preseason with the Bengals before getting cut. He also spent part of the season with the Arizona Cardinals. Taylor takes a spot vacated by offensive lineman Reid Fragel, who was picked up by the Browns last week. His addition to the practice squad means that fellow linebacker J.K. Schaffer likely will remain on the active roster for the time being. The Cincinnati native and former University of Cincinnati standout was part of the active roster last Thursday for only the second time this season.
