White learned piano during time away

College basketball has yet to really get to know Royce White. What would have been his freshman season at Minnesota was doomed by legal troubles, and now he's off to Iowa State for a second chance. So maybe we'll find out soon.

Aside from what we learned about him through reports put out by recruiting services and the police, who is this guy? The Ames Tribune provides us with one nugget:

New Iowa State men's basketball player Royce White can play the piano. I was surprised when I found out. Not because he can play the piano, but because of when he learned -- last year when he didn't play college basketball.

"He is a very intelligent kid," ISU men's basketball coach Fred Hoiberg said.

Of course, he learned piano! Maybe it wasn't such a coincidence that in the infamous YouTube video during which he announces he will "leave college basketball," White's statement is immediately followed by the piano intro to Timbaland's "Apologize" as his basketball photos appear in slideshow format. No one appreciated the symbolism there?

Anyway, hints of White's musical influences appear throughout the bizarre videos of him put out by YouTube user "whiteandbrownrecords." White's statements include lengthy musical interludes. In one clip, he even appears in a homemade rap video called "Truth about Tubby Smith" and then introduces the rapper T-storm before promoting an entertainment company's website.

"I want to major in music," White said in the video. "I'm into music. I'm into the entertainment industry."
