ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- Devin Gardner said he never received a scholarship offer from Ohio State. So when he received a recruiting letter from the Buckeyes after he had committed to Michigan, the now-junior quarterback for the Wolverines made a decision.
He chose to burn it.
“I had already committed to the University of Michigan,” Gardner said. “And I was pretty bitter that they didn’t offer me a scholarship.”
Gardner was the No. 5 quarterback in the country in the Class of 2010 and the No. 128 prospect overall out of Inkster, Mich. He had chosen the Wolverines over a host of other schools that had offered him and stuck with it.
The Ohio State letter was the only one Gardner burned and soon after, he received a text message from his brother.
“My brother texted me and told me I shouldn’t have done that,” Gardner said.
Now, after having started the past three games at quarterback, picking up two straight Big Ten Offensive Player of the Week awards, Gardner will likely head to Ohio State as Michigan’s starting quarterback with an objective of burning the Buckeyes with his play on the field.
