The next key NHL contracts to watch for

YORK, Pa. -- If there was any concern a deal hasn’t been struck yet, Calgary Flames center Sean Monahan hid it well.

Standing in a school cafeteria, where he'd just finished sharing lunch with a group of kids he was coaching during Bob Hartley's annual hockey camp, Monahan removed any suspense about finding common ground on a new contract with the Flames.

Yes, as a restricted free agent, he could be an offer-sheet target. But he reaffirmed his dedication to the Flames and being part of that team's movement toward being a playoff contender.

"It's just a matter of when it's going to get done," Monahan said. "I want to play in Calgary. I want to be there a long time. You think about it a little bit, but at the end of the day, your play makes your contract. I'm just going to wait and hopefully sign something soon."

Monahan and fellow restricted free agent Johnny Gaudreau were both working the camp last week and, naturally, the two spoke about their contract situations. They're both going to get huge deals with the Flames, and the sense is that there is a little more clarity on Monahan's next deal than there is Gaudreau's.
