Will the Red Wings trade a goaltender?

While goaltenders around the NHL struggle this season, the Red Wings have gotten stellar netminding from Jimmy Howard and Petr Mrazek (not pictured). David Hahn/Icon Sportswire

To reel off six consecutive wins as the Detroit Red Wings have, different players take turns carrying the load. Sometimes, it’s the older guys like Mike Green and Thomas Vanek. Sometimes, it’s the young guys like Dylan Larkin and Andreas Athanasiou. Sometimes it's the special teams or power play.

On Thursday against the St. Louis Blues, it was the goalie’s turn. Again. Petr Mrazek was outstanding against St. Louis, finishing the game with 31 saves. He was especially good in the shootout, where he allowed just one goal in eight rounds, patiently keeping the Red Wings in the game until Henrik Zetterberg won it.

Heading into this season, Red Wings general manager Ken Holland was hoping goaltending would be a strength, but after last season’s uneven campaign by his goalies, there was no way to be sure. Early indications are promising.

Mrazek improved to 4-2 with a .925 save percentage after the win over St. Louis. Backup Jimmy Howard is 2-0, with a .984 save percentage and a shutout.

Naturally, with goalies around the league struggling, it leads to the question as to whether the Red Wings are getting trade calls on Howard.
