Day 2 recap: Mandatory minicamp

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The Cowboys finished the second day of their mandatory minicamp and coach Wade Phillips said he was pleased with the progress of the two practices on Saturday, calling it a "real strong finish for us." Here are highlights of the two practices.

*Starting cornerback Terence Newman was shaken up toward the end of practice when he was knocked down by wide receiver Jesse Holley on a deep pass that took place right behind Jerry Jones as he was talking with reporters. Newman was nursing his right foot after the play but later returned.

"You certainly don't want any injuries," Phillips said. "But they can happen at any time. We had two players last year hurt when we weren't doing this, one of them in the weight room. You worry about injuries at anytime. We try to be as careful as we can and I think we did a good job with that."

*Starting right guard Leonard Davis missed practice because of a funeral, and his status for Sunday's final practice hasn't been determined. Keith Brooking (knee), Donovan Woods (undisclosed) and Brandon Williams (knee) did make the first practice but didn't particpate in the second one. Igor Olshansky (back) also missed the second practice. Dez Bryant (hamstring) took part in both practices.

*Wide receiver Patrick Crayton received second-team reps in practice Saturday. He got snaps with the third and fourth teams Friday.

*With Davis out, the Cowboys mixed-and-matched their offensive line using Kyle Kosier at center and moving Pat McQuistan to both guard spots. One formation had Kosier at center and Andre Gurode, the starting center, moved to right guard.

*It should be noted that kickers David Buehler and Connor Hughes didn't attempt any field goals in front of the media the first two days of practices.

*Notes: Cornerback Mike Jenkins wore jersey No. 4 in the afternoon pratice and receiver Sam Hurd continued to wear his green socks. ... Quarterback Tony Romo didn't address the media during the mandatory minicamp. A gaggle of reporters waited near his locker following the Saturday morning practice. Romo, however, did speak with reporters following every round of golf as he tried to qualify for the U.S. Open and Byron Nelson championship. ... Cowboys coaches and scouts praised the work of backup right tackle Robert Brewster. ... The second practice, held at Cowboys Stadium, was held in front of 5,200 people. Some fans stood along the sidelines. ... Wade Phillips said after a few adjustments the coaching staff should have its playbooks and evaluations done by the end of next week. "We made a lot of progress," Phillips said. ... Every Cowboys player is under contract for the exception of the draft picks, including first rounder Dez Bryant and second rounder Sean Lee. ... Sunday's practice, scheduled for Valley Ranch at 10:30 a.m. is supposed to last two hours but may bbe cut short. It's family day and the players may bring family members to practice for a cookout.
