Cowboys third-string quarterback Stephen McGee will start tonight's preseason finale vs. Miami at Cowboys Stadium.
McGee is not fighting for a roster spot, as it appears the Cowboys will keep three quarterbacks on the roster this season.
One of the things the Cowboys are looking for in McGee is development.
Can McGee become a future No. 2 quarterback behind Tony Romo?
"I just take it one play at a time," said McGee, a former quarterback at Texas A&M. "That's my whole mindset -- just leave the last play behind whether it was a touchdown or an interception or whatever it was. Just move on."
In the last week, McGee was the scout team quarterback, which was beneficial to him because he gained more reps in practice. As the No. 3 quarterback, he might get 10 snaps combined in team drills. And those snaps take place after Romo and current No. 2 QB Jon Kitna get their work in.
"Always a lot better for me when I can get reps like that," McGee said. "It's pretty tough with the third group for me. It seems easier for me whenever I can get a rhythm out there."
In the preseason, McGee has completed 57.8 percent of his passes with no touchdowns and no interceptions. No matter what he does here, as we've said, he's not going anywhere. But the Cowboys would like to see how he handles himself when under pressure: Can he zip a throw to a receiver under tight coverage? How will he handle a two-minute offense?
McGee was supposed to get this chance last year, but a knee injury sidelined him for the final preseason game and he spent the 2009 season rehabbing.
Healthy now, McGee has struggled at times in camp. He's normally practicing against the first- and second-team defenses and it's difficult to get passes off when DeMarcus Ware and Anthony Spencer are bearing down on you.
"[The Cowboys] seen what I can do," he said. "They know my abilities. I just want to go out there and have fun and compete. And do what I love to do."
