What he did in 2010: Church was active for every game but the season opener and finished with 14 tackles on defense. He saw action mostly as a reserve in the sub packages but played a lot at strong safety in a Week 15 win against Washington after Gerald Sensabaugh suffered a concussion. He finished tied for third on the team with 16 special teams tackles.
What to look for in 2011: The Cowboys will look for help at both safety spots this offseason and could lose Sensabaugh to free agency. There is some hope Church can develop into a player worth keeping even if he is not the long-term solution. He was a box safety at Toledo but quickly showed a knack for being around the ball in mini-camp and training camp. He is not the fastest or most fluid but he knows how to keep himself out of trouble. He was flustered a little bit vs. the Redskins by the speed of the game but was able to keep plays in front of him. He was one of the Cowboys’ better special teams players as well.
Quotable: If I can go back to my rookie mini-camp and watch that tape, boy, that would be one confused player. I’ve come a long way since camp and a lot of the plays we put in then are second nature to me now. I’ve learned a lot. If you take one step forward instead of reading and stepping back it can make the difference on a bomb or completing a dig across the middle. Reading your keys is a little different here and that’s what Coach Maxie and Coach Campo taught me. I think the thing I got best at was reading routes when I got back there and knowing this guy is going to do that just by studying film and checking splits and pre-snap reads … I feel like I can be an effective player and do the scheme the way they want me to. -- Barry Church
Bryan Broaddus’ Scout’s Eye: The thing about Barry Chuch and really it happens with all rookies, especially safeties, it’s all about reaction. That’s the thing he and Danny McCray are going to have to learn. When you see something, you’ve gotta go get it. A lot of it has to do with guys having to think too much. They’re good playrs once they see it, now they’ve got to go get it and be quick and confident that you’re going to be right. The fact that he got some experience is good and he understands the speed of the game now. He’s got really nice size. He’s not afraid to tackle and he can be a physical player.
