“It felt good,” said Smith, who is listed as questionable on the official injury report. “It felt better than the last couple of days when I was hurt.”
If Smith can’t play then Jermey Parnell would make the first start of his career. Smith said a test will come Saturday to see how the knee responds after a day of practice. He suffered the injury Wednesday when he got his leg rolled while blocking DeMarcus Ware.
He said wearing a brace “really saved me,” in terms of more extensive damage. He missed one game last year at Southern Cal but played in the final 12 games.
“It’s not good to sit out, ever,” Smith said, “but I don’t want to hurt my team by being out there hurt.”
Center Phil Costa, who has had limited participation in practice the last three days due to a knee sprain that sidelined him the last two preseason games, is listed as questionable. Cornerback Mike Jenkins (neck/knee) is also questionable.
Cornerback Terence Newman (groin), tight end Martellus Bennett (ankle) and wide receiver Laurent Robinson (hamstring) are out.
