Source: Cowboys claim QB Rudy Carpenter

The Cowboys claimed quarterback Rudy Carpenter off waivers from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, a source confirmed.

Carpenter, who turns 26 this month, broke into the NFL on the Cowboys’ practice squad in 2009 as an undrafted free agent out of Arizona State. Tampa Bay claimed him off the Cowboys’ practice squad in November of that season.

Carpenter had been with Tampa Bay since then but appeared in only one game. The Buccaneers released him Wednesday.

Carpenter is likely to compete with Stephen McGee to be the No. 3 quarterback behind Tony Romo and Kyle Orton.
