Cowboys cut two, sign one; roster at 89

OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys’ roster stands at 89 after punter Cody Mandell and running back Ben Malena were waived.

Malena suffered a quadriceps injury that would have kept him out for the rest of the preseason. If he clears waivers, he will revert to injured reserve. In all likelihood, the Cowboys will reach an injury settlement with Malena and have not closed the idea on him returning later in the season.

“He’s done a really good job up to this point,” coach Jason Garrett said. “We wanted to see him play. Unfortunately that’s not going to happen this preseason. At some point, we might want to give him a chance again.”

Mandell averaged 43.7 yards on three punts, all of which inside the opponent’s 20. He never really pushed incumbent Chris Jones for the job.

The Cowboys signed running back D.J. Adams, who spent time this spring with the San Diego Chargers. Garrett said the Cowboys are looking to fill the last spot with a kicker. Mandell had the ability to handle kickoffs, which took some pressure off Dan Bailey.
