Pondering the 46: Heavy on the DL

IRVING, Texas -- Every week during the regular season we will take a look at the possible inactives for the Dallas Cowboys' upcoming game.

Week 1 can sometimes be a tricky one to figure out because of the new faces that get added late to the 53-man roster. For this week’s opener against the San Francisco 49ers, the Cowboys have new faces in linebacker Korey Toomer, defensive ends Jack Crawford and Lavar Edwards, and offensive tackle Donald Hawkins.

We know two Cowboys will not play: Anthony Spencer (knee) and Darrion Weems (shoulder). The Cowboys typically dress only seven offensive linemen, so that leaves Hawkins as a spectator. The Cowboys also will not dress a third quarterback, so rookie Dustin Vaughan should be watching.

Figuring the final three spots comes down to preference.

Devin Street is the fifth receiver and does not play special teams, but Terrance Williams showed up on the injury report with a back bruise. Do the Cowboys go heavy at receiver and dress all five? Toomer is still learning the defense but can help on special teams. Edwards and Crawford are trying to learn the defense as well, but with Spencer out and Terrell McClain banged up, both could be active. George Selvie is expected to play, but has a shoulder injury that could force the Cowboys to dress Edwards and Crawford.

So the inactive prediction is this: Spencer, Weems, Hawkins, Vaughan, Street, Toomer and McClain.
